Dr Richard Bodmer FRSA
Director
Richard Bodmer first came to the Peruvian Amazon in 1984 as a doctoral student studying at the University of Cambridge in England. Over the past 40 years he has dedicated his professional career to Amazon conservation, working on wildlife research and conservation, community-based wildlife management and teaching university students. Richard has had academic positions at the Goeldi Museum in Belen do Para, Brazil; University of Florida, USA; and the University of Kent, England, where he is Professor of Ecology and Conservation. He received a doctorado honorario from la Universidad Nacional de la Amazonia Peruana. Together with a dedicated team of professionals, Richard helped build the Indigenous Cultures Museum, the Historic Boat Museum and the restoration of the Casa Morey.
Tula G. Fang
Co-director
Tula was born and educated in Iquitos, Peru. She completed her undergraduate degree at the National University of the Peruvian Amazon and a MSc at the University of Kent. Tula;s research has focussed on primates, river turtles, and peccaries. She has been involved with community-based conservation and is part of the museum and Casa Morey management teams. Tula has been the chair of the Latin American Wildlife Society, and has worked for WCS.
Kimberlyn Chota Pinedo
Science staff
Kimberlyn is part of the full-time research station staff. She did her undergraduate degree in Biology at the National University of the Peruvian Amazon. Kimberlyn has been involved with river dolphin research and also with the broader vertebrate research. Kimber;yn is involved with the community conservation and educational programs. She is co-author on numerous publications and is part of Comfauna – The Latin American Wildlife Society.
Paola Uraco Mafaldo
Science Staff
Paola is part of the full-time science staff at the research station. Paola did her undergraduate degree in Biology at the National University of the Peruvian Amazon. Her thesis work was on the Amazonian bats. Paola is involved in studies on birds, frogs, fish, and other research.
Osnar Pizuri Espinar
Science Staff
Osnar is part of the full-time science staff at the research station. Osnar did his undergraduate degree in Ecology at the National University of the Peruvian Amazon. Osnar is working on terrestrial mammals for his thesis using camera traps and Distance analysis. Osnar also works on caimans lizards, and fish research among other projects.
Percy Correa del Castillo
Logistic Administrator
Percy is responsible for the logistic administration for the Amazoneco and Fundamazonia operations. Percy studied Administration at the National University of the Peruvian Amazon. He is the regional champion for marathon running and often competes in national events.
Elizabeth Souza
Financial Administrator
Elizabeth is responsible for financial administration of Amazoneco and is the Treasurer of Fundamazonia. Elizabeth studies Business Administration at the National University of the Peruvian Amazon.
Dr Pedro Mayor
Fundamazonia Board
Pedro Mayor, lecturer and researcher from the Autonomous University of Barcelona is a member of the Fundamazonia Board. His research is focused in the field of biology, ecology, health, conservation and management of wildlife, within the specializations of public health, zoonoses, one health, food security and sovereignty, morphology, reproduction, alimentary ecology of wild species, impact of human activities, sustainable models of subsistence hunting, sustainable use of natural resources and productive strategies for the rural Amazon. Pedro has a 19-year experience working in the Peruvian Amazon. In this period, he has developed a broad and deep activity on the holistic conception of Amazon rural communities. Pedro is a renowned Amazon scientist with many internationally recognized publications.
Dr Pablo Puertas Melendez
Fundamazonia Board
Pablo is on the Board of Fundamazonia and was one of its founding members. Pablo did his BSc at the National University of the Peruvian Amazon -UNAP and his thesis was on the night monkey. Pablo completed his MSc at the University of Florida with his research on community-based wildlife management in the Amazon. Pablo’s PhD also looked at the wildlife management plans and sustainability of subsistence hunting. Pablo worked for the Peruvian Primate Project, was the coordinator of WCS in Peru, President of IIAP, and the Director of Cincia in Iquitos. Pablo is a renowned Amazon scientist with many important publications.
Miguel Antunez Correa
Fundamazonia Board
Miguel is one of the founding members of Fundamazonia. He did his BSc and MSc at the National University of the Peruvian Amazon. Miguel is a renowned wildlife field biologist with a focus on the large mammals and community-based wildlife management plans. Miguel has co-authored many scientific publications and coordinates annual data analysis at the research station.
Anne-Sophie Wiedenmayer
Fundamazonia PhD Fellow
Anne-Sophie Wiedenmayer is an ethnobotanist and land system scientist, affiliated with Rio Amazonas Research Station as a Fundamazonia PhD Fellow. Her project investigates wild edible plants in the northeastern Peruvian Amazon, focusing on how local women access, use, and valorise them across seasonally flooded, transitional, and upland forest types. Anne-Sophie holds a BA in Social Anthropology from the University of Fribourg (Switzerland), an MSc in Ethnobotany from the University of Kent at Canterbury (UK), and is a current PhD student in Geography at the University of Cambridge (UK) where she is a member of the Conservation and Development Lab at the Conservation Research Institute.
