ROOMS and SERVICES

The Research Station is based on the historic steamboat ‘Rio Amazonas’ that is moored at the Yarapa River Research Reserve next to the Amazon. You travel to and from the research station in a boat. 

The ‘Rio Amazonas’ has been restored to its Victoria ambiance and has en-suite cabins, spacious dining room, lecture room, library/laboratory, and plenty of open deck areas. 

Renovations in 2026 have upgraded the boat to 4-star accommodation similar to the Hotel Casa Morey.

Rooms

Rooms have single, double, and triple accommodation.

Rooms have 24hr fans and daytime AC.

Rooms have en-suite shower and toilet facilities with hot and cold water, amenities, and towels.

Rooms have a desk and wardrobe and are cleaned daily.

Services at the Research Station

 

There is 24 hour 220-volt electricity in the cabins and throughout the boat using off grid solar energy.

There is laundary service available at the research station.

Starlink wifi is available 24 hours.

Rooms are cleaned daily.

There is a library and bar, and pleanty of open deck space, both shaded and sunny.

Meals

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in the dining room. Special diets are catered to including vegetarian, vegan, pescatarian, and glutton free. The menu does not use any peanuts or peanut products.

MAIN DISHES FOR LUNCH AND DINNER

All dishes are accompanied with salads, bread, beans, rice, or potatoes, and a dessert or fresh fruit.

Drinks include freshly made tropical juices (chicha morada, maracuja, star fruit, lemonade, orange, pineapple, watermelon, papaya), teas, and coffee

Amazon fish fillet: Amazon fish made with a light olive oil and tomato sauce

Chicken and vegetables: Chicken with various vegetables in escaveche sauce

Spaghetti bolognese: Minced meat with a tomato sauce

Chicken and green rice: Chicken and cilantro sauce

Breaded fish and creole sauce: Amazonian fish served with plantains or casaba/onion sauce

Cream of chicken: Chicken in a white sauce

Stir fry with oyster sauce: Various vegetable fried in oyster sauce

Mexican tortillas: Minced beef in tomato sauce over the tortillas  and salad

Spaghetti with meatballs: Minced beef in tomato sauce

Roasted chicken: Chicken with mashed potatos

Chicken stewed: Chicken with a light sauce and potatos

 HOW TO GET THERE

Arrival Airport: Iquitos, Peru

Destination: Rio Amazonas Research Station, Yarapa River Research Reserve, Loreto, Peru

Travel time from Iquitos to the research site is 3-4 hours; two hours in automobile and two hours in boat.

You fly to Iquitos, Peru. We will pick you up at the airport and take you to the research station or hotel. If you spend time in Iquitos before or after the expedition you will need to pay for your hotel separately since it is not included in the station fees.
